Anime stores in Japan are mostly grouped in a few areas of Tokyo and Osaka, and the same chains show up in city after city. Some goods are only sold at the shops themselves, and many shops give their own store bonuses (tokuten). This guide helps you pick a city and tells you what kind of shop each big chain is.
In short:
- In Tokyo, start with Akihabara or Ikebukuro. In Osaka, go to Den Den Town for secondhand goods and figures, and to Umeda or Shinsaibashi for official series shops.
- animate is a general anime shop. Mandarake, Lashinbang, and SURUGA-YA are secondhand shops.
- Tax-free shopping changed in November 2026. See Tax-Free Shopping in Japan.
Store information below was checked on the official pages of each store or building from Japan in November 2026. It can change, so check the store’s page before you go.

Shops at the airport
You can still shop on your way home:
- Narita Airport Terminal 1: Pokémon Store Narita Airport Shop, and COSPA Official Store Narita Airport 1 (before passport control).
- Haneda Airport Terminal 3: TV TOKYO HONPO.
Before you go
- Opening times vary. Mandarake opens at 12:00 at every store. Check each store’s page for hours.
- Crowds: Nintendo’s stores may hand out numbered tickets for entry on busy days such as weekends and holidays. Some floors of LUCUA SOUTH in Umeda may need a lottery entry or a numbered ticket for a while after it opens.
- Adult material: Secondhand shops and doujinshi shops can have adult (18+) sections or floors. If you’re with children, check the floor guide first. Some countries ban adult material, including drawings, from being brought in. Check your country’s customs rules before you buy.
- Tax-free: Each shop needs its own permit, so shops in the same building can differ. The system changed on November 1, 2026. See Tax-Free Shopping in Japan.
- Photos: Ask the staff before taking photos inside.
What we haven’t verified
We checked the official pages of each store or building from Japan in November 2026. We haven’t verified:
- Whether shops and hours are still the same after November 2026
- Shops in cities other than those listed here
- Whether shops without a tax-free mark on their pages offer tax-free shopping, such as Nintendo’s stores, Mandarake (except the Kyoto store), and Yodobashi Camera
- Each shop’s rules on taking photos inside
