Akihabara Anime Shops: Where to Go, Building by Building

Akihabara anime shops are mostly around the Electric Town Exit of JR Akihabara Station, in the buildings by the station and along Chuo-dori. You’ll find shops for new goods, secondhand shops, and figure stores. This guide goes building by building, starting from the station.

In short:

  • Start with Akihabara Radio Kaikan, about 1 minute from the Electric Town Exit: figure, secondhand, and doll shops on floors 1 to 8.
  • North along Chuo-dori are animate, Mandarake Complex, and SURUGA-YA.
  • Opening times vary a lot. Some shops open at 9:30, others at noon.

Store hours and floors below were checked on the official pages of each store or building in November 2026. They can change, so check the store’s page before you go.

Akihabara Radio Kaikan (in front of the station)

Akihabara Radio Kaikan is open 10:00–20:00, but each shop keeps its own hours. Anime, figure, and doll shops are on floors 1 to 8.

Arriving in the morning? Start near the station.

Tourist information:

  • AKIBA_INFO (Akihabara UDX 2F): English and Chinese, an original area map, baggage storage and delivery. 11:00–17:30, closed Mondays (the next day if Monday is a holiday) and over the New Year holidays.

Keep this in mind if you’re with children. Some countries ban adult material, including drawings, from being brought in. Check your country’s customs rules before you buy.

Tax-free: animate, MELONBOOKS, Lashinbang, and Bic Camera say on their store pages that they offer tax-free shopping. SURUGA-YA’s three Akihabara stores in this guide are on SURUGA-YA’s list of tax-free stores. Tax-free shopping changed on November 1, 2026. See Tax-Free Shopping in Japan.

What we haven’t verified

We checked the official pages of each store or building from Japan in November 2026. We haven’t verified:

  • Whether hours and floors are still the same after November 2026
  • Whether shops without a tax-free note on their page offer tax-free shopping
  • Each shop’s rules on taking photos inside
  • The hours of Akihabara Gachapon Kaikan
