Ikebukuro Anime Stores: Sunshine City and the East Exit

Ikebukuro anime stores are mostly on the east side of JR Ikebukuro Station, between the East Exit and Sunshine City. Ikebukuro also has many shops for women fans, and a few more stores on the west and south side of the station.

In short:

Start with animate Ikebukuro Flagship Store, which Guinness World Records named the largest anime shop.
Sunshine City has Pokémon Center MEGA TOKYO and Bandai Namco Cross Store Tokyo.
Many shops for women fans are in Higashi-Ikebukuro.

From the East Exit toward Sunshine City (Higashi-Ikebukuro)

Sunshine City

Getting there (Sunshine City access):

From JR Ikebukuro Station: about 8 minutes from East Exit No. 35. Walk down Sunshine 60 Street to the underground entrance beside Sunshine Vision (open 7:00–23:30).
From Higashi-Ikebukuro Station (Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line): about 3 minutes through the underground passage from Exits 6 and 7 (open 7:00–23:00).

Hours: Shops in alpa are open 10:00–20:00, and shops in ALTA 11:00–20:00. Some shops keep their own hours.

Tourist information: Glocal Cafe on alpa 1F is a tourist information center certified by the Japan National Tourism Organization, with help in English and other languages. 10:00–20:00 (Sunshine City).

– You need a ticket bought in advance on asoview! (adults ¥3,500, about US$22 at the November 6, 2026 exchange rate). Tickets for each month go on sale at 12:00 Japan time on the 15th, two months before, first-come, first-served. Tickets aren’t sold at the park or at convenience stores. Weekend slots fill up, so book early. – Cash isn’t accepted. – Enter from the underground entrance next to the Nitori store on Sunshine 60 Street, not from street level. – 10:00–19:00 (last entry 17:40).

Tax-free: animate, Lashinbang Ikebukuro Character Palace, MELONBOOKS, and Bic Camera say on their store pages that they offer tax-free shopping. SURUGA-YA Ikebukuro Character Goods Store is on SURUGA-YA’s list of tax-free stores. In Sunshine City, ONE PIECE MUGIWARA STORE, the Crayon Shin-chan store, and Donguri Republic are on Sunshine City’s list of tax-free shops. Tax-free shopping changed on November 1, 2026.
