In Japan, many manga volumes come out in two versions, usually on the same day: the regular edition, and a tokusouban (特装版, “special edition”) that comes with an extra item, such as stickers, an acrylic stand, or a short novel.
In short:
- A tokusouban has the same manga pages as the regular edition, plus an extra item.
- It’s a separate product with its own price and ISBN.
- The extras are made for the Japanese release, so they are often hard to find outside Japan.

What tokusouban means
- 特装版 (tokusouban): a special edition of a single volume, sold with an extra item.
- 通常版 (tsuujouban): the regular edition.
- The manga pages are the same. Publishers say so on the product page (“the contents of the volume are the same as the regular edition”).
- It’s a separate book, with its own price and ISBN.

Tokusouban or genteiban?
You’ll also see 限定版 (genteiban, “limited edition”). Kodansha, for example, uses both names for the same kind of book and lists them together under “limited editions and special editions.”
Example: Witch Hat Atelier (Kodansha)
- Vol. 15 limited edition (限定版): with an acrylic stand of Coco, newly drawn by the author.
- Vol. 16 special edition (特装版): with a hardcover notebook of Qifrey’s.
What comes with them
The extra item changes with each volume, even in the same series. Frieren special editions, by volume:

How it differs from English and French special editions
English and French editions have special editions too, but they are usually a different kind of product. Examples of Witch Hat Atelier and Attack on Titan:

Words you’ll see on Amazon.co.jp
Amazon.co.jp product names are in Japanese. These words tell you which version you’re looking at:

- The special and regular editions have separate pages on Amazon.co.jp. Check that the product name includes 特装版 or 限定版.
- Special editions with a short novel may also come out as a Kindle e-book, with 特装版 in the name. If you want the printed book, check that the format isn’t Kindle.

- Some special editions are made to order or never reprinted, so you may not be able to get one later.
