What Is a Japanese Mook? Goods Sold as Books

In Japan, you can find bags, pouches and other goods sold as books, on the magazine shelves of bookstores and at convenience stores. These are brand mooks: magazine-style books where the main item is the goods that come with them.

In short:

A mook is a cross between a magazine and a book.
A brand mook is made for one brand or character, and the main item is the goods, such as a bag or a pouch. The booklet is only a few pages.
They are sold in Japan as books, so Amazon.co.jp lists them as books too.

What is a brand mook?

“Mook” comes from magazine + book. It’s made like a magazine, but it isn’t replaced by a new issue each month, so it can stay on the shelf as long as it sells. In English, a similar format is sometimes called a bookazine. We haven’t seen ones built around goods outside Japan.

A brand mook is a mook made for one brand or one character. It’s built around an item that comes with it (付録, furoku), such as a bag or a pouch in that brand’s or character’s design.

One brand or character per mook. Each one is made with a fashion brand, a lifestyle brand or a character.
The item comes first. The item is the reason people buy it, and the booklet is short.
Made only for the mook. The item is made for that mook, so you usually can’t buy the same one elsewhere.

Things to know

The booklet is in Japanese. It’s only a few pages, so you don’t need to read Japanese to use the item.
Many are sold only in Japan. We haven’t found an official release outside Japan for the brand mooks we list.
Reprints depend on sales. A popular one may be reprinted, but not every one is.

What we haven’t verified

We live in Japan, so we can’t test ordering from outside Japan and having an item delivered.
